Knowledge and awareness on successful technologies used in dentistry among undergraduate dental students of a private dental college in Chennai

Abstract: The field of dentistry is constantly evolving and changing to best suit the patient's needs. Dentist’s is always on the lookout for new and emerging technologies to make patients' experience comfortable. In Healthcare advances in new ways every day as new technologies are leveraged for the care of our bodies. The better the technology for dentists to use, the easier it can be for the biannual visits we all endure. The aim of the present study is to access the knowledge and awareness about successful technologies used in dentistry among undergraduate dental college students. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among undergraduate dental college students aged 18-25 years to assess their knowledge and awareness on successful technologies used in dentistry. Approval was obtained from the institutional review board, prior to the start of the study. Simple random sampling was done. A total of 105 participants were involved in the study. Self administered questionnaire of close ended questions was prepared related to successful technologies used in dentistry and distributed among undergraduate dental college students through online survey forms “GOOGLE FORMS”. SPSS software was used to analyse the results. Chi square test was used as inferential statistics.In the present study, 89.4% of participants agreed that technology had changed the world of dentistry. About 70.2% of the participants preferred clinical technology over administered technology. The majority of the participants(76%) were aware that CAD/CAM technologies were used in maxillofacial surgery . About 68.3% of the participants agreed Invisalign was a great technology in dentistry .About 60.6% of the participants were aware of Robo dentistry. The knowledge and awareness about successful technologies used in dentistry is satisfactory in the present study. For further augmentation,awareness should be created through various programs and published to the students.
