Awareness of Advances in Periodontal Regeneration - A Survey

Author: G. NIVEDHITA, BALAJI GANESH S, M. P. BRUNDHA
Abstract: Periodontal regeneration is the process of restoration of periodontium or the supporting structures of the tooth-like alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament. It heals by repair and adhesion of connective and formation of new periodontium. There are many procedures or strategies used for regeneration of periodontium. Bone graft replacement is one of the commonly used strategies for regeneration of periodontium. The grafts used are either autograft, allograft, xenograft, or alloplast. Guided tissue regeneration is another predominantly used technique. The principle of GTR is based on the assumption that periodontal ligament cells have the potential to regenerate. Growth factor and bone morphogenetic proteins have the unique property of inducing ectopic bone formation. They mainly act as mitogen for the regeneration of periodontal tissues. Platelet-rich plasma, platelet-rich fibrin are concentrated suspensions of growth factors that stimulate the healing of periodontal tissues. This study was done as an online survey to analyse the awareness of advances in periodontal regeneration among PG dental students and PG graduated dental practitioners from Chennai. A questionnaire was circulated and responses were collected. The responses were manipulated in Excel and then copied to SPSS software version 23 for analysis. Descriptive analysis was done to find the frequency distribution on the data, Chi square test was done. It is found that both PG dental students and PG graduated dental practitioners have knowledge on various parameters of periodontal regeneration and that there is no significant difference among the two groups of population (p value >0.05). It was concluded that within the limitation of the survey there was basic knowledge on periodontal regeneration methods and materials but better knowledge should be acquired in the future for more clinical practice and testing of various periodontal bio-regenerative materials is necessary.
