Knowledge, attitude and awareness about use of CBCT as a diagnostic tool in dental radiology among undergraduate dental students -a questionnaire study

Author: VAISHNAVI SIVAKALI SUBRAMANIAN, MARAGATHAVALLI, ARAVIND KUMAR S
Abstract: CBCT imaging as a new diagnostic tool in modern-day dental medicine can't be overemphasized and has progressively been used for diagnostic maxillofacial imaging. CBCT offers the practitioner third-dimensional and multiplanar views for a more accurate diagnosis and treatment while not radiation exposure of standard computerized tomography (CT) scans. Furthermore, CBCT overcomes certain limitations of 2-dimensional imaging like distortion, magnification, and superimposition. Therefore the aim of the this survey was to investigate the knowledge and awareness about CBCT,its uses and interpretation among the undergraduate dental students.A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among the undergraduate dental students of Saveetha Dental College. The sample size of 260 students were selected. A close ended questionnaire was used to assess the students perspective about the CBCT as dental radiology. A survey software was used to reduce sampling bias. Repeated answers or questioning were avoided. All undergraduate dental students who are willing to participate in the survey were included in the study. Chi-square tests are applied to find the association between the parameters and the level of significance. First year and second year students were not aware about CBCT as a diagnostic tool in dental radiology and its uses in dentistry. It is also inferred that there is a need for additional CDE/workshop programmes among the undergraduate students to improve their knowledge in CBCT in dental radiology.Within the limitations of the study,we can contemplate that awareness about CBCT increases as the study year increases.More programmes can be conducted to educate the 1st and 2nd year students also.
