Knowledge and awareness on role of diet in incidence of dental caries among general population - a survey

Author: A. AKSHAYA, K. R. DON
Abstract: Dental caries and periodontal caries are probably the most common dental diseases in the world. Dental caries is a multifactorial infectious disease characterised by demineralisation of the inorganic and organic substances found in the tooth. Dietary substrates cumulatively contributed as etiology of dental caries. Sugar consumed is fermented by oral bacteria that can cause decline in dental plaque pH. The aim of this study is to check the knowledge and awareness of the role of dietary products in incidence of dental caries. A Self structured questionnaire survey was conducted among 150 participants of different age groups. The survey was conducted on an online basis. The questionnaire was designed in order to assess the knowledge and awareness rate of individuals among the role of diet in dental caries. The statistical test used was descriptive analysis and chi square test. p value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. The confidence level of the study was set to 95%. In our study, around 91% of individuals are well aware that food plays a main role in dental caries occurrence and also more than 80 % of participants know the possible ways to prevent caries production. In our study, it was found that the Graduate level educated parents were more aware than the secondary school level and post graduate level parents. Knowledge and awareness about the role of diet in incidence of dental caries was found to be moderate. Furthermore awareness and importance of the role of diet in caries should be educated among both rural and urban norms.
