Aim: To study the antimicrobial activity of solanum nigrum infused selenium nanoparticles (Sn NPs.
Materials and Methods: A clean beaker was taken and 2g of Solanum nigrum powder was added to 100 ml of distilled water and boiled for 10 minutes. The contents were then filtered and a viscous filtrate was obtained. 0.595g of selenium nitrate powder in 50 ml distilled water and 50 ml of Solanum nigrum extract. The solution was kept in a magnetic stirrer for synthesis and was preliminarily characterised by using UV-vis-spectroscopy. Agar well diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activity of the S.nigrum NPs. Different concentrations of S.nigrum SnNP’s was tested against Candidiasis albicans, Streptococcus mutans (gram +), and Lactobacillus sp using mueller hinton agar plates.
Results: It has been observed that the antibacterial effect of the prepared selenium nanoparticles was irregular and the maximum zone of inhibition (ZOI) was found against Candidiasis albicans and minimum ZOI against Streptococcus mutans. It has also been observed that the antibacterial activity of the S.nigrum mediated selenium nanoparticles increased with increasing concentrations.
Conclusion: This study indicates the antimicrobial activity of S.nigrum NPs increases its efficacy in the field of medicine and propagates its use in various antimicrobial products. The efficacy of its action on C.albicans which is almost on par with antibiotics is found to be promising for future studies and production of medicinal commodities.
