Introduction: Traffic accidents are associated with high rates of mortality. Nowadays, drug abuse is recognized as
one of the main causes of road accidents. The present study aims to investigate the effects of drug abuse
prevalence of drivers on traffic accidents, and their demographic characteristics while hospital admission.
Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed on injured people in traffic accidents admitted to
emergency departments of hospitals affiliated to ShahidBeheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, in 2016. In
this regard, a questionnaire containing demographic characteristics of patients and the type of narcotics used while
driving was designed by the researchers. After obtaining written consent, patient data was collected and recorded
by an emergency physician. Finally, the collected data were analyzed by SPSS Statistics V.19.
Results:Totally, 320 patients were studied of which 278 (87%) were male and 42 (13%) were female. The most
frequency of drug users was found in the age group of 21-30 with 107 (33%) patients. The most prevalent drugs
consumed by injured drivers were cannabinoids with 28% followed by alcohol with 25%, respectively.
Conclusion:The results of this study are consistent with other similar studies, showing a change in drug
consumption pattern in recent years toward using more cannabinoids and alcohol. This requires more attention
from health and transportation authorities and policymakers to prevent such accidents.
