Maintaining the oral cavity is very important as it is the common site of microbial colonisation. The oral cavity contains about 100 to 200 species of microorganism. The normal flora of the oral cavity is not harmful. The increase in the bacterial organism causes the oral complications. The normal oral flora contains mainly Lactobacilli, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium. As a naturally available homemade caries prevention agent the lemon peel extract was tested on the oral flora. There is a need to find out the activity of the lemon peel extract on the oral flora. In this study crude extract of the lemon peel was used to find out its activity. The in vitro analysis of the lemon peels extract against the oral flora was done by using agar disc diffusion method. The organisms included in this study were the Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans and Lactobacilli. In this study the lemon peel extract has shown significant antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The other two organisms tested lactobacilli and Candida albicans have not shown any inhibitory effects with the lemon peel extract. Lemon peel extract has good prevention against the caries in the oral cavity.
