Comparative Evaluation of Cytotoxicity of Syzygium Aromaticum and MTA on Human Dental Pulp Fibroblast- An In Vitro Analysis

Author: SWARNA.S.K , NIVEDHITHA.M.S
Abstract: Introduction: Clove oil has been used as a dental pain reliever from ancient times due to its obtundent effect. Pulp capping procedures may still cause some pain with commonly used pulp capping agents such as calcium hydroxide and MTA. Aim: The objective of the study is to evaluate the cytotoxicity of Syzygium aromaticum on cultured human dental pulp fibroblast and to compare with MTA for use as an indirect pulp capping agent with an obtundent effect. Methodology: The primary pulpal fibroblast cells were used for the MTT assay. The concentration of clove oil tested was 0.025%, MTA was used as positive control and cells without intervention were considered as negative control. Methylthiazol- diphenyl-tetrazolium (MTT) cytotoxicity assay was performed, and the cell survival was observed and analyzed at intervals of 24 and 48 hours. Cell survival between groups was analyzed using ANOVA test and Bonferroni test was performed as post hoc multiple comparison method. Results: There was a decline in cell survival in both the groups after time 24 and 48 hours but was statistically significant in the MTA group. On an interval-wise comparison, the decline in cell survival was statistically significant between the three groups at 24 h (P = 0.001). Conclusions: It can be concluded that the cytotoxicity of clove oil is similar to that of MTA and hence it can be used as a direct pulp capping agent with an obtundent effect
