Background: Nature has all solutions to most of the problems faced by mankind. Numerous valuable therapeutic components have been isolated from plants. In the current era, the use of herbal formulations as medicine is gaining more importance and popularity. Several herbal formulations which make use of plant extracts have been found to be safer medicines with minimal side effects when compared to chemical drugs. Pumpkin seed oils have rich sources of bioactive compounds such as tocopherols, sterols, ß-carotene, and lutein along with some fatty acids, high nutritional value factors. The components have so far been proven to have a positive effect on human health.
Aim: The aim of the study is to estimate the phytochemical constituents and antibacterial activity of Cucurbita maxima seed oil
Method: Preliminary phytochemical analysis for carbohydrates, alkaloids, flavonoids, lipids, tannins, terpenoids and triterpenoids were made by standard procedures. The antibacterial activity was tested using agar well diffusion technique against selected bacterial strains
Result: The quantitative phytochemical analysis of Cucurbita maxima seed oil exhibited the presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, total flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids and lipids in considerable quantity. The oil at different concentrations showed significant antibacterial activity. Pumpkin seed may add great value to product innovation in the industrial, nutritional, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields
