Awareness of whitespot lesions in orthodontic patients among dental students

Author: SOWMYA G.S, DR NAVANEETHAN.R, DR SANKARI MALAIAPPAN
Abstract: White Spot lesions are areas of white opacity on the surface of the tooth. These are areas of demineralization. Since that area is not minaralised properly, that spot scatters light differently and thus gives it the appearance. In fixed orthodontic treatment and fixed appliance use, there is a high rate of reported cases of white spot lesions around the brackets due to plaque accumulation which are difficult to clean. White spot lesion can also progress into caries. These white spot lesions are both an esthetic concern, as well as is a potentially carious lesion. This study was made in the form of a survey for dental students to determine the knowledge and awareness of dental undergraduate students about white spot lesions induced by Orthodontic treatment. The participants for the study were undergraduate dental students from private dental institute, India. In this study ,we have used an online survey with a set of questions regarding white spot lesions and their answers were recorded and evaluated as to how many participants knew the correct answer of the questions. Chi square tests were also done to find if there are any gender differences among the dental students in their awareness and the site of white spot lesion with regards to the bracket. 83% of the dental students were aware of white spot lesions while 17 % were unaware of the lesions. A majority of the participants (94%) also believed that a good oral hygiene would reduce the incidence of the lesions. There was a difference of opinion in management of white spot lesions where 57% chose microabrasion, 27% chose tooth whitening and 14 % chose veneers. There was also no gender difference in the awareness of white spot lesions as P>0.05. The understanding and awareness of white spot lesion due to orthodontic appliances in dental students was fairly good when it comes to the awareness of association between orthodontic treatment and white spot lesion. Even though the awareness about white spot lesions was fairly good, there are a few areas, such as etiology, differential diagnosis, treatment options etc., where there is a need for better understanding of white spots among dental students.
