Comparative Evaluation of Anti-Gingivitis Effectiveness of Ayurvedic And Fluoridated Toothpaste.

Author: JAYAJANANI S, JAYASHRI PRABAKAR
Abstract: Background: Gingivitis is mostly due to accumulation of plaque. Mechanical plaque control is largely the responsibility of the individual using toothbrushes and interdental cleaning aids. Despite one’s best efforts, mechanical aids fail to desperately remove plaque biofilm, for which chemical plaque is often recommended as an adjunct to mechanical plaque control to help maintain gingival health. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to compare and evaluate the anti-gingivitis effectiveness of ayurvedic and fluoridated toothpaste. Materials and Methods: A single blind randomized controlled trial was conducted among 20 healthy individuals. The participants were randomly allocated into two groups: Group I(Experimental group- Ayurvedic toothpaste), GroupII (Controlled group- Fluoridated toothpaste). Before conducting the trial, the study design was explained to the qualifying participant and informed consent was obtained from the voluntary patients who were willing to participate in the study. The gingival index was recorded at baseline and 7th day. Wilcoxon signed Rank test used to compare the mean differences before and after treatment within each group for Gingival index score. Mann-Whitney ‘U’ tests to estimate gingival index score between the groups. Results: A statistically significant reduction in mean Gingival Index score was observed in both Group I and Group II at baseline and 7th day follow up. But there was no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups at the 7th day of follow up. Conclusion: To conclude, there was no statistically significant difference was observed in the mean gingival index between group I and group II at the 7th day of follow up. Hence, ayurvedic toothpaste can be used as an effective antimicrobial oral hygiene measure against gingival diseases.
