Abstract: Objectives: To compare the mean lesion depth after remineralization with synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite reinforced with Anisochilus carnosus, Ocimum sanctum and Coriander sativum on artificial caries lesion using polarized light microscope. Materials and methods: In this in vitro study, 28 human maxillary premolar were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Initially, synthetic hydroxyapatite reinforced with anisochilus carnosus, coriander sativum and ocimum sativum was synthesised using calcium chloride, disodium hydrogen phosphate and Indian herbs. With respect to pre-study procedure, enamel window formation was prepared in the teeth specimens and they were immersed in demineralizing solution for a period of 96 hours. Then the samples were randomized into four groups. About 7 samples per group. Artificial caries lesion was formed in the teeth specimens and they were subjected to pH cycling. After this, teeth specimens were sectioned using hard tissue microtome and lesion depth was analysed using polarized light microscope. Statistical analysis was done using Kruskal Wallis test in SPSS software. Results: Mean dental caries lesion depth of Group 1(demineralizing solution), Group 2 (Coriander sativum reinforced synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite), Group 3(Anisochilus carnosus reinforced synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite) and Group 4 (Ocimum sativum reinforced synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite) was found to be 164.51±4.29, 125.97±16.0, 142.6±7.34and 137.52±5.01. The difference in mean dental caries lesion depth between the study groups was found to be significant statistically( p value- 0.000). Conclusion: In the current study, all three treatment agents showed a greater efficacy in reduction of dental caries lesion depth. However, coriander reinforced synthetic hydroxyapatite was found to have higher remineralizing potential compared to anisochilus carnosus and ocimum sativum. This newer remineralizing agents with Indian herbs was proved to be beneficial and can be used in preventive and restorative materials to prevent and control dental caries.
