Preparation Of Tulasi, Aloe Vera And Turmeric Formulation And Its Antioxidant And Antimicrobial Activity

Author: DHANVANTH.M , UMA MAHESWARI.T.N, S RAJESHKUMAR
Abstract: Aim: To prepare an in-situ gel containing tulasi, aloe vera and turmeric and plant formulation, and analysis of its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. Tulasi is a medicinal plant that helps in reducing inflammation by inhibiting the inflammation causing enzymes. Turmeric acts as a chemopreventive agent that inhibits the development of oral cancer. Aloe vera is a natural plant and its extract promotes wound healing, and also has antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and antiinflammatory properties. Turmeric has been found to inhibit many disease processes through their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Materials and methods: This study extracts are used in preparing in-situ gel. About 1g of tulasi, aloe vera and turmeric was mixed with 100 mL of distilled water and boiled for 15 minutes, filtered and again concentrated till 10mL. The antioxidant activity of this herbal formulation is assessed by mixing it with DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) assay. The anti-microbial activity is assessed by administration of this herbal plant extracts into media containing Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus aureus. Results: In-situ gel which has more gelation and bioavailability was prepared, antioxidant assay showed significant results with 50 µL (90.6.) of gel. The antimicrobial activity showed maximum zone of inhibition is seen in streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: This study shows the combination of tulasi , aloe vera and turmeric produces good antioxidants when compared with other antioxidants. There are also good antimicrobial properties in these extracts. Hence tulasi, aloe vera and turmeric can be used as safe herbal alternatives instead of chemicals in commercially available antioxidants and antimicrobials for oral lesions.
