Abstract:

Pergularia daemia (PD) is a traditional folk herb grown around the tropical and subtropical regions of India. Pergularia daemia has widespread application in different folk medicine in villages in the Ayurvedic medicine and are believed to increase defense against various diseases. It is commonly called Veliparuthi or Uthamani in tamil. The Plant possesses cardenolides, triterpenes, lupeol, saponins, alkaloids steroidal compounds. Bioactive compounds like coroglaucigenin, calactin, calotropin, uzarigenin, other cardenolides and a bitter resin were also shown to be present in the seeds of PD. The plant has been investigated by recent researchers for its therapeutic benefits like hepatoprotective effect, anti-diabetic effect, hypolipidemic effect, anti- oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, antifertility, psychopharmacological activity, neuroprotective effect., anticancer activity etc. Since this plant has more therapeutic potential, it can be guided for human trials for future research as it is already being consumed externally as well as internally for their health benefits.
