Stress is a commonly encountered problem faced by every individual. Although many stressors affect us throughout the day, noise happens to act on us many times. The effects caused by everyday exposure to noises stress affects the cardiovascular, nervous system and immune system as well. The present study planned to evaluate the effect of chronic noise stress on immunological profile of wistar albino rats. Ethanolic extract of Pergularia daemia (PD) was evaluated for its immunostimulant activity and protection against noise induced immunosuppression. Noise stress was induced by a function generator that delivers pure tone noise at an intensity of 100 dB with a frequency of 10 KHz for 28 days. Ethanolic extract of PD was administered orally at a dose of 200 mg/kg bwt using oral gavage as pretreatment for 7 days and for 28 days with chronic noise stress. Plasma corticosterone, stress index was determined to evaluate stress induced in the animal. Immunological parameters in blood like WBC count, Differential leucocyte count, Neutrophil adherence test and Candida phagocytosis was done. The results of the study showed that exposure to animals to noise stress for 3hrs/day for 21 days produced a significant increase in plasma corticosterone with a to noise stress resulted in significant decrease in total leucocyte count and neutrophil, eosinophils and lymphocyte count, neutrophil adherence to nylon column and enhanced phagocytic and avidity index compared to control. It also showed a significantly increased organ weight / body weight ratio of spleen, thymus. Administration of PD extract significantly prevented against the immunological changes caused by chronic noise stress. Thus, it can be concluded that PD extract offers protection against chronic noise induced immunosuppression.
