Spirulina platensis and bentonite are known to have antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study is to
formulate methanolic extract of spirulina and bentonite nanoparticles into peel-off gel mask, and to evaluate
the physical properties and antioxidant activity of the gel mask. Bentonite nanoparticles were synthesized using
High Energy Milling method and characterized using PSA and SEM. The gel mask formulation were optimized
using factorial design method, to study the effect of two variables, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydroxypropyl
methyl cellulose (HPMC) concentration on the organoleptic, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity, and
drying time of the peel-off gel mask. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1pikrilhidrazil)
method.
The results showed the particle size of bentonite was 152.8±0.69 nm. The optimized
formula was obtained with the concentration of PVA and HPMC were 13 and 2.5% b/b, respectively. The
optimized gel mask exhibited antioxidant effects on DPPH radical scavenging with the IC50 values of 173.56
µg/mL. The peel-off gel mask was successfully developed with good physical stability, and showed moderate
antioxidant activity.
