Tanakan - standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) has a wide spectrum of pharmacological activity, which allows it to meet numerous pathological requirements - hemodynamic, hemorheological, metabolic. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Tanakan endonasal electrophoresis therapy for non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). Patients (165) were randomized 1:1:1 to three groups by 55 each and observed within 6 months. The control group patients received standard therapy for 10 days. The first main group patients received additional Tanakan (EGb 761) in tablets (TT-group) for 10 days. The second main group patients instead of Tanakan in tablets received endonasal electrophoresis by Tanakan (TE-group) for 10 days. Improvement DR 2-steps or more was observed in 27%, 57%, and 0% eyes of the TT-group, TE-group, and control-group respectively at month 6. More than 43% of the control group patients had a 2-steps or more worsening in their DR severity at month 6. Mean retinal photosensitivity deviations decreased by 25% in the TE group, while in the control and TT groups only by 16% and 21%, respectively. This study demonstrated the need for early Tanakan endonasal electrophoresis therapy for DR to achieve the most effectively reduce the risk of progression to the proliferative stage.
