Extraction, Phytochemical Investigation of Phytoconstituents Isolated from Buchanania Lanzan Leaves.

Author: , BHUSHAN RAGHUNATH PAWAR, GURDEEP SINGH
Abstract: Buchanania lanzan is a deciduous tree which produces seeds commonly known as chironji. These almond flavoured seeds are used as primarily in spices and ingredient in sweets. Buchanania lanzan is having wide history of traditional medicinal uses in the treatment of various diseases; such as haemorrhage, blood-borne diarrhoea. A vast extensive research is being already carried out to discover novel magic drugs that are pharmaceutically active. The bark were shown to be contains highest phenolic compounds, showing promising antioxidant activity. Alongside it’s also reported to show, adaptogenic activity, anti-inflammatory, analgesic activity, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic activity, anti-diarrhoeal activity, antiulcer activity, anticancer activity and wound healing activity. In the present research after successive extraction with ethyl acetate and methanol; the crude powder of leaves of Buchanania lanzan showed the presence of carbohydrate, glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and saponins. The complete phenolic compounds and flavonoids in quantities expressed as gallic acid equals and rutin equivalents were also quantitative study. The cumulative phenolic content of ethyl acetate extract was 19.33 in Buchanania lanzan and 32.66 in methanol. The overall flavonoid content of ethyl acetate extract from Buchanania lanzan was 15.33 and 27.66 for methanol extract. The overall amount of phenolics and flavonoids in methanol extract was highest. Spectral analysis of fractions by IR and NMR Spectra confirm the existence of hydroxy and methylene protons. Mass spectrum thus shows that the compound may have a Celidoniol, Nonacosan-10-ol.
Keyword: Buchanania lanzan, total flavonoids, total phenolics, celidoniol.
