Drug release rate and dissolution behavior are the key element for evaluation and optimization of any formulated solid dosage form. Two solid dosage forms, i.e. granules, for M. oleifera leaf 50% ethanol extract were prepared. The effects of adding hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) on drug release behavior and mechanism was evaluated. Additionally, different mathematical kinetic methods were tested in order to determine the rate of drug dissolution and to propose drug release mechanism. Such methods include graphical analysis and Mathematical model-dependent methods. The results showed that addition of 200 and 300 mg HPMC respectively, lead to improvement in extent and rate of drug dissolution by modifying the release mechanism. Additionally, the results of five mathematical model-dependent drug release kinetic revealed that drug release mechanism was suggested to be case II transport mechanism. Using of HPMC in the formulation of natural products provide a control over drug release and improve drug dissolution profile which ,consequently, may improve bioavailability and bioactivity.
