The use of Ostrich eggshell membrane as a barrier for guided bone regeneration in rabbit’s femoral condyle defects: Histological study

Author: MUSTAFA RASUL MUHAMMED, OTHMAN A. OMER, BAKHTIAR MUHIALDIN AHMED
Abstract: Objective(s): The aim of this study was to evaluate the final outcome of bone regeneration across the ostrich eggshell membrane (ESM) conduit. Materials and Methods: Thirty adult male New Zealand rabbit weighing between 3 and 4 kg were equally randomized into (1) Eggshell membranes with autograft and (2) autograft without eggshell membrane on bone regeneration in femoral defects. One 6 mm wide, full-thickness defects were made in the femoral bones of each rabbit. One defect after grafting remained non-covering as a control while in the second defect; the autograft is covered by prepared eggshell membranes. The healing of grafted defects in both groups were evaluated histologically after one, two and three months. Bone formation was scored as nil or minimal, limited or complete bone healing. Results: On the first month, there was no significant difference in bone formation between the two groups (P> 0.05). However, on the second and third months the mean bone formation of ESM group was significantly greater than the control group (P< 0.05). Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that eggshell membrane effectively enhances bone regeneration and promotes functional recovery in injured femoral bone of rabbits.
