Evaluation of Activities of Daily Living in Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) In Indian Context- Pilot Study

Author: U.GANAPATHY SANKAR, MONISHA.R
Abstract: Human body attains its functional demands through movement. Moving the segment of a limb or a whole leaver help us to perform variety of activities of daily living skills. When there is a defect in movement production, there is a trouble in executing the activities of daily living skills. Thus difficulty in movement is the significant problem for majority of school children. American psychiatric association labeled it as DCD- developmental coordination disorder in 1994. In-order to examine, how children’s difficulty in motor coordination impact the activities of daily living skills, we conducted in-depth one to one interviews with parents to examine activities of daily living skill in children with and without DCD. When the assessment was compared with typically developing children, it has been proved that children with DCD exhibit difficulty in dressing, eating and maintaining personal skills. Difficulty in maintaining a good posture and difficulties in executing fine motor skills were the underlying cause for inefficient performance in activities of daily living skill. When different age group of children with DCD is compared and analyzed for their difficulty in performing ADL task, it has been proved that older children with DCD found to exhibit improved performance in completing the ADL task but however found to have many additional difficulties. Overall, the motor difficulties present in children with developmental coordination disorder had a significant impact over the performance of activities of daily living skills.
