Implementation of Mobile Application for Diabetes Self-Management on Self Efficacy and Clinical Outcome in Indonesia

Author: LUSY NOVIANI, AJENG DIANTINI, ANAS SUBARNAS
Abstract: Background: The use of mobile-Health (mHealth) has become an opportunity to improve the clinical outcomes of chronic disease. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of interprofessional health care involvement of the 'Sahabat Diabetes' app on self efficacy and control of HbA1c patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted at Atma Jaya Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants in the study were T2DM patients with uncontrolled HbA1c (>7) recruited from December 2019 to February 2020. Patients who received DSME mHealth intervention with those who received conventional counseling during a follow-up period of 3 months were compared. DSME was measured by the Diabetes Self-Efficiency Questionnaire (DSEQ) and the HbA1c score. Results: Of the 60 participants, 50-60 years of age (63.3%) and female (55%) were the majority. Patients self efficacy improved from 36.6 in the pre-test to 51.07 in the post-test (p<0.001) in the intervention group. The mean intervention group HbA1C decreased by approximately 0.79% (p<0.001) compared to the control group with only 0.31%. Conclusion: The intervention of the DSME program 'Sahabat Diabetes' has shown that the application significantly improves self-efficacy and reduces HbA1c in T2DM patients. This mobile application can be used routinely to control the self-management of T2DM patients in order to improve clinical outcomes.
