Mouthwash is a solution used for cleaning the oral cavity, usually stored at a certain time without considering the changes of pH value and antibacterial activities. As a consequence, some herbal components intended in mouthwash application are used. One of the herbals potentials to be used in mouthwash is cashew (Anacardium occidentale Linn.) stem bark, which contains some phenolic compounds having an anti-bacterial agent. The purpose of this study was to determine the storage effect of cashew stem bark extract as mouthwash on pH value and inhibitory growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The study used mouthwash formula containing cashew stem bark extract with different concentrations using sorbitol 1% and peppermint oil 1.5% as vehicles in each 10 mL of formula. The measurements of pH value and the growth inhibition of S. aureus were carried out using pH meter and diffusion method on days 1, 7 and 14, respectively. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that there was significant difference (P < 0.05) on the effect of storage time in mouthwash containing cashew stem bark extract on pH value and the inhibitory growth of S. aureus. Conclusion: the storage time of cashew stem bark extract can affect pH value and inhibitory growth of Staphylococcus aureus as mouthwash.
