Evaluation of Mussaenda erythrophylla Schumach. &Thonn. leaves against human lung carcinoma

Author: ASTALAKSHMI NARAYANAN, SENTHILKUMAR PALANIAPPAN
Abstract: Cancer is the one of the deadliest diseases that alarm’s the world. It is a group of diseasea involves abnormal cell growth and broaden to the various parts of the body rapidly. Currently available treatments for cancer include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and drugs derived through chemical entities. Different type of cancers affect humans. Plants always serve as an important source of secondary metabolites and are being investigated for effective activity against cancer. Anticancer activity of plants can be determined by their cytotoxicity. Mussaenda erythrophylla of Rubiaceae family is largely seen in gardens and parks as an ornamental plant in India. It is native to Western tropical Africa. The current study focuses at evaluating the cytotoxic potential of leaves of Mussaenda erythrophylla Schumach. & Thonn. with lung carcinoma(human) cell lines(A-549). Mussaenda erythrophylla leaves were successively extracted using solvents viz., Petroleum ether(60-80?C), chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. The successive extracts were tested for their cytotoxic potential against human lung cancer (A549) cell lines by MTT Assay. The study was carried out at 200µg/ml, 100µg/ml, 50µg/ml and 25µg/ml. Petroleum ether and methanolic extracts were found to be a potential cytotoxic agent against A549 cell lines with IC50 values of 40.45 and 40.47 µg/ml. Chloroform and ethyl acetate successive extracts were found to be lesser cytotoxic against human lung cancer cell lines as compared to petroleum ether and methanolic extracts.
