Assessment of HELLP Syndrome in Iraqi Pregnant Women

Author: NAMIR I.A.HADDAD
Abstract: Theory: HELLP syndrome is one of the most serious conditions that may associates with pregnancy that causes essential risk for both mother and her fetus. Neopterin is a catabolic product of guanosine triphosphate (GTP), a purine nucleotide, and belongs to the group pteridines. Aim: The purpose of our study is to assess HELLP syndrome among Iraqi pregnant women, furthermore to find its impact on serum neopterin concentrations. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of seventy- four Iraqi pregnant women divided into three groups; Partial HELLP (P1) group that consists of 24 patients, Complete HELLP (P2) group that consists of 24 patients and Control group (C) that consists of 26 healthy subject. Around 5 ml of venous blood was withdrawn from each participant for the purpose of measuring serum neopterin and several other biochemical parameters. Results: Serum levels of neopterin showed a high significant increase in women with partial HELLP syndrome, and complete HELLP syndrome, in comparison with healthy individuals (22.83±3.7, 31.29±4.9 vs. 8.3±2.4) nmol/L respectively. Conclusion: According to the concept that illustrates the implication of inflammation in progression of HELLP syndrome and the strong association of neopterin with inflammation, the elevation of neopterin may be used as indicator for assessing HELLP syndrome in Iraqi pregnant women.
