Restoring tooth decay plays an important role in maintaining a child's oral health. Tooth colored dental materials are preferred to restore tooth decay. Glass ionomer cement is classified into nine types where type 2 is used for restorations and type 9 is used for pediatric and geriatric use. This study was aimed to evaluate the preference of type of glass ionomer cement material to restore class 1 cavities for children between the age group of 3-17 years of age by dental undergraduate and postgraduate students. Data from patient management software was collected. Tabulation of data was done in an excel sheet. Data was copied to SPSS software and statistical analysis was done. Out of 3983 class1 restorations done in children, 2681 cavities were restored with type 2 Glass ionomer cement and 1302 were restored with Type 9 glass ionomer cement. Type 2 and Type 9 glass ionomer cement was used greater in males (60%) as compared to females (40%). Type 2 glass ionomer cement was and Type 9 glass ionomer cement was used greater in primary (94.5%) as compared to permanent dentition (5.5%). We observed that dental students preferred type 2 glass ionomer cement over Type 9 glass ionomer cement for class I restorations.
