Abstract:

The aim of the study is to assess gingival inflammation among nicotine dependent and nicotine free individuals among the population. The use of tobacco has now been considered the newest plague of the 20thcentury. Out of 930 million worldwide tobacco users, 182 million smokers abide in India. Consuming tobacco can have numerous unfriendly consequences for our oral and dental wellbeing. The relationship between smoking and periodontal health was investigated as early as the middle of last century. The study was conducted to compare the gingival inflammation among nicotine dependent and nicotine free individuals among the population. The population was divided into 2 groups. Patients who smoke and have periodontal issues and patients who don’t smoke with periodontal issues. They were grouped under the names as smoking and non-smoking groups. The study was conducted in a university setting. Data collection was done using the dental archives patient management software offered by the institution. The data that was collected was tabulated in excel and then imported into SPSS software. No significant correlation present between gingival index in smoking and non smoking population (p = 0.763). No significant correlation present t between periodontal index in smoking and non smoking population (p = 0.078). Most prevalent value on gingival index among smoking patients- moderate gingivitis. Most prevalent value on periodontal index among smoking patients - Established destructive Periodontal disease. Most prevalent value on gingival index among non smoking patients- moderate gingivitis. Most prevalent value on periodontal index among non smoking patients - Established destructive Periodontal disease. Within the limits of this study, there is no significant difference between in gingival inflammation among smokers and non smokers.
