Gingivitis refers to the inflamed condition of the gingival tissues covering the tooth. This is a nondestructive type of periodontal disease. Post-menopausal period refers to the stage where the menstrual cycle in women ceases. Hormonal changes are common during this post- menopausal period. Due to the hormonal changes occurring during this period, various oral manifestations are encountered. These oral manifestations differ in each woman. The purpose of this research is to encounter the prevalence of gingivitis during this period. This retrospective study was conducted by obtaining the patients records. Data was collected from the patients who visited Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals. This study includes woman who are under postmenopausal period and within the age groups of 50 to 60 years. Women with other systemic complications such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, thyroid disorders, etc. were excluded. The gingival index score of each tooth was calculated and the mean gingival index score was obtained for each patient. This score was then interpreted as mild, moderate and severe gingivitis. The data obtained was entered in SPSS and statistically analyzed. The mean age group of the women who are under post-menopausal period was 55.5. Highest number of age groups was 55 and 57 [21.4%]. The results revealed that the prevalence of mild gingivitis was 95.7% and moderate gingivitis was 4.3%. When age of the women and the prevalence of gingivitis was associated and analyzed, it revealed higher prevalence of gingivitis in higher age groups. The mild gingivitis was prevalent in all age groups. The prevalence of gingivitis in women during post-menopausal period is higher in higher age groups. The prevalence of mild gingivitis is more prevalent than the moderate gingivitis. As the age group increases, prevalence and intensity of the gingivitis increases.
