Marginal discrepancy in fixed partial dentures

Author: P.CHITHAMBARA SHATHVIHA, DR. DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, DR. MEBIN MATHEW
Abstract: Any discrepancy in the marginal area leads to dissolution of luting agent and plaque accumulation. The periodontal health of the abutment teeth and durability of denture depends on the marginal adaptation of the fixed partial denture. The aim of the present study was to determine the marginal discrepancy in fixed partial denture patients.A total of 875 patients were taken and analysed for marginal discrepancy. The study is done under university setting. The results were analysed using SPSS software version 20 by IBM.Chi-square test was done to compare the proportion between the variables and the p value for statistical significance was set at p<0.05.From the overall study , it was found that there is less marginal discrepancy in fixed denture wearers.(p<0.005),which is statistically significant. Quality of finish lines in fixed partial dentures is clinically good.A good marginal fit without any marginal discrepancy seems to be one of the most important technical factors for the long term success of prosthesis.
