Knowledge And Awareness On Factors Causing Insomnia Among College Students - A Survey

Abstract: Introduction: Insomnia is a sleeping disorder. It is caused due to a lot of factors like stress, medication, hyperthyroidism, noise, light, temperature, increased screen time, chronic illness, anxiety and menopause. People with insomnia worry a lot about sleep and face frequent arousal from sleep, which leads to a lot of stress and mental problems.The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of factors causing Insomnia among college students. Materials and Methods: An online survey was conducted among college students to evaluate the knowledge, awareness of the factors that lead to insomnia.The study population was the adult urban population of Chennai, with a sample size of 100. The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions and was shared to the participants using online survey platform. The study was conducted in the month of may, 2020. The statistics done using SPSS software, chi square test was done to check the association and a p value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant. Results: 84% of the survey population were aware of the medical condition Insomnia and its causes.90% of the study population strongly believe that lifestyle changes can be a best treatment for insomnia. The results of this survey clearly indicates that there is good awareness about insomnia among college students and also found that both male and female students were equally aware of causes and prevention of insomnia (p-value>0.05). Conclusion: This survey proves that the majority of the College students(84%) were aware about the causes and prevention of the medical condition 'insomnia’, and also found that both male and female students were equally aware of the factors that lead to insomnia.
