Author: , NAZ FATHIMA RAJ MOHAMED, GAYATHRI R, YUVARAJ BABU K, VISHNU PRIYA V
Abstract: Parent-child relationships are among the most important relationships for adolescents. Adolescence is a time of rapid biological, cognitive and neurological changes which have a direct effect on psychosocial functioning and relationships. Adolescents generally expect independent decision making, this creates clashes between parent-adolescent relationships and leads to several conflicts. The aim of this survey was to evaluate and create awareness on the changes in personality of their adolescent children among parents. An online survey was conducted among parents using a questionnaire in google forms. The Questionnaire consisting of 16 questions were framed based on the knowledge and awareness about personality changes in adolescents and circulated to 106 participants, who were parents of adolescent children. The results were obtained and statistically analysed through SPSS software, chi square test was done to check the association and a p value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant. The survey was done in May 2020. Results were analysed using SPSS software and represented as pie-chart and bar graphs. From the survey, 63.55% of the participants were affectionate to their children, 19.63% showed hatred. About 41.51% were aware that parents are more influential in personality development. Nearly 55.66% of participants observed that physiological changes are very difficult to handle. About 50.94% were aware that there were obvious mood swings due to hormonal changes . It was found that irrespective of the gender both the male and female parents were equally aware of the personality changes of their adolescent children and were not able to handle the same (p-value>0.05). The survey has created awareness and draws attention to how knowledge about personality changes in adolescence promises aid to prevent issues between parents and their adolescent children that can lead a way towards promoting a healthy adolescent period. It was also evident that parents of both the gender were equally aware of the personality changes associated with their adolescent children.
