Abstract:

The aim of the study was to analyze the knowledge and awareness of forensic odontology among the dentists Forensic odontology involves the application of dental sciences in the identification of deceased individuals through comparison of antemortem and postmortem records and through forensic odontology a dentist plays a very important role in crime investigation of any type.
The present cross sectional questionnaire study was conducted in 2020 among 138 dentists through a self administered questionnaire. The responses were collected and statistically analyzed in SPSS. The descriptive statistics and chi square test were used as statistical tests and the confidence level was set to 95% and p value of <0.05 was taken to be statistically significant. In the present study, 87.68% reported awareness on the significance of maintaining dental records in identifying the deceased and /or crime suspects. 45.65% had formal training in collecting, evaluating and presenting forensic dental evidence. This study shows that dentists have moderate knowledge and awareness on forensic odontology. BDS level educated dentists had higher knowledge and awareness of forensic odontology than MDS level educated dentists.
