Knowledge and awareness on consanguineous marriages and associated birth defects among the general population - Asurvey

Abstract: Consanguinity is a deep rooted social trend among one fifth of the world population mostly residing in the Middle east, West Asia, Africa, North America, Europe, and Australia.The mountains public awareness on prevention of congenital and genetic disorders in offspring is deriving an increasing number of couples contemplating marriage and reproduction in highly consanguineous communities to seek counselling on consanguinity. Educational research has proved by conducting a lot of surveys based on this. The actual reasons given for the preference of consanguineous marriages are primarily social.The morphologic facial growth of the child resembles one of their parents. The aim of the study is to sses the knowledge and awareness about consanguineous marriages and their birth defects. An online survey was conducted .Few questions about consanguineous marriages were asked and was circulated among the public and the responses were collected.The results were analysed statistically. Out of 100 participants, 55 of them were males, 45 of them were females.Married participants were 58, 42 were unmarried.93 % of them were aware about consanguineous marriages, 7 % of them were unaware about it. The conclusion of the study is people have knowledge about consanguineous marriage and majority of consanguinity marriages occur as a result of social factors. Only less people are in a consanguineous relationship.
