Assessment of Clinical Exposure to Single Visit RCT in Maxillary Teeth among Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Students - A Retrospective Analysis

Author: KRISHA DOSHI, RAGHU SANDHYA, S. DELPHINE PRISCILLA ANTONY
Abstract: Single visit endodontics is the current trend in contemporary endodontics. Although it has numerous advantages, it is technique sensitive and requires proper case selection. Clinical exposure to such contemporary endodontic techniques at an early stage in education boosts the confidence of the students to practice it even in future. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the clinical exposure to single visit RCTs in maxillary teeth among undergraduate and postgraduate dental students of an Institution. Data for the study was collected retrospectively from July 2019 to March 2020. 86000 patient records within this period were reviewed. Excel sheet tabulations were made involving age, gender, treatment, tooth number and qualification of students. Descriptive statistics was done on SPSS software. Association between the tooth and qualification of students was analyzed with chi square test. A total of 2102 single visit RCT procedures were done, of which 306 (14.6%) were done by undergraduates and 1796 (85.4%) were done by postgraduates. A statistical significant association was obtained between the tooth and qualification of the student, (p<0.05). Undergraduates performed single visit procedures in only maxillary anterior teeth, while postgraduates performed these procedures in all maxillary teeth. Maximum number of procedures by undergraduates were in maxillary central incisors, while by postgraduates were in maxillary first molars. In conclusion, the undergraduates received good clinical exposure with respect to maxillary single visit RCTs, while postgraduates received excellent clinical exposure to all maxillary teeth.
