Abstract: Probiotics are important for maintaining gut health. Probiotics can be defined as living microbes that beneficially influence the health of the host, the use of the probiotic is said to be an imperative aspect in dentistry in prevention and treatment of caries, periodontal disease. The advantages conferred by the probiotics are attributed to their to maintain a good balance of the intestinal flora composition. An ideal probiotic preparation is considered to be the one that has high cell viability, resistant to ph level and acid. Probiotics and prebiotics are available in a myriad of forms commercially in the market such as functional food and beverages (dairy product, non dairy beverages, breakfast, cereal baked food, fermented meat products, dry food probiotics). The aim of the study is to know about the awareness of probiotics among undergraduate dental students. A questionnaire based survey was conducted among 165 undergraduate students of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. Electronic web based questionnaire were shared for receiving the responses. The data was analysed using SPSS software. The results were displayed and observed in pie charts and graphs. Majority of respondents were aware about the uses of probiotics. In future probiotics supplements, can be incorporated in dental practice. Probiotics represent a new area of research in dental and especially in periodontal therapy. It plays an important role in combating issues with overuse of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance. Much more scientific developments are needed to have a better understanding of these tiny forms of lives in order to broaden their potential applications.
