Dental Ailments Afflicting Geriatric Population Subset of an Outpatient Population Visiting a Dental Hospital

Abstract:

This study has been conducted to see the most common dental ailments which affect the geriatric patients subset of the outpatient population visiting a dental college. Oral health is an important factor for maintaining overall health, well-being and quality of life. It includes a range of diseases and conditions that include dental caries, periodontal diseases, loss of teeth, oral cancer, oro-dental trauma and birth defects such as cleft lip and palate (WHO). In order to achieve good health, it is important to know some aspects of geriatric age. In old age body tissues get harder due to more fibre and calcification, collection of toxic by-products in the body leads to impaired functions of various systems. In this present retrospective study we assessed the different dental ailments which are commonly faced by the elderly population. This study was conducted in a university setting. Reviewed patients records and analysed the data of 2166 geriatric patients between March 2018 and March 2020. Data of the geriatric patients was tabulated in a chronological order, data from google sheets was imported to SPSS software by IBM for statistical analysis, the statistical test used was the chi-square test. The type of analysis done is correlation and association by descriptive data analysis. In this study the results obtained were as follows, Males in the geriatric age are mostly affected by pain, dental caries and missing teeth. Females in the geriatric age are mostly affected by dental caries and recent mobility of teeth, respectively. There is a peak in the incidence of dental caries and obesity in the age group of 60 to 70 years, missing teeth are mostly seen in patients above the age of 65 years. It was observed in the study that pain was the most common among all dental ailments, seen among geriatric population equally in both genders. In our study, we can conclude that males are more prone to mobility of teeth, pain and missing teeth than females. 60-70 yr old patients had more incidence of dental caries, mobility and above 65 years missing teeth were more prevalent.
