Prevalence of Smokers Palate and Correlation with Habit Frequency and Duration among Outpatient Population Visiting a Dental Hospital

Author: CIBIKKARTHIK T, DR. GHEENA S, DR. JESSY P
Abstract: Nicotina Stomatitis is a whitish papular lesion seen on the hard and soft palate of the oral cavity, possibly caused by blockage of palatal mucus glands. This specific entity usually occurs in pipe users, cigarette smoking and tobacco users. The knowledge of nicotina stomatitis is essential as an odontologist. This study aims to throw some limelight on Nicotina Stomatitis and assess the important parameters associated with nicotina stomatitis such as habit frequency, duration and the lesions associated. The study was performed as a retrospective study under a university setting and the data required for the study, i.e, the data of the patients diagnosed with smoker’s palate was procured by reviewing the patient records of about 86000 patients visiting the dental college from June 2019 to March 2020. The obtained data was tabulated in excel systematically. Data was then entered in the SPSS analysis software and descriptive analysis and correlation statistics performed. The obtained results were tabulated and graphically represented. Results from the study reveals that the prevalence of smokers palate among the males is 98.1% and among the females is 1.9%; distribution of smokers palate among various age groups reveal 51.9% below 50 years and 46.3% above 50 years. Further assessment of smoking habit duration revealed about 77.8% of the population with smoking habit below 10 years and 22.8% of the population having the smoking habit more than 10 years. The correlation between the Age groups and the frequency of duration revealed Pearson Chi-Square Value-0.488; p>0.05. Hence statistically not significant. Thus, within the limitations of the current study, there is a higher prevalence of smokers palate among the Males and those below 50 years of age who have a history of smoking habit less than 10 years duration.
