Management of Midline Diastema: Patient Perspective of Various Options

Author: MANYA SURESH, DR.NIVETHIGAA B
Abstract: Midline diastema, which occurs as spacing between the upper central incisors, is a common occurrence seen in the population. In the ugly duckling stage of development ,no treatment is usually advocated as the diastema is a transient one. When diastemas occur due to other pathologies, they pose problems in relation to esthetics and speech. With time, the patient's demand for esthetics has greatly increased. Along with this, a less time-consuming treatment option may be a favorite. Proper diagnosis of the diastema and its etiology, helps in devising an adequate treatment plan. This eventually will lead to stability of the final result.Case records of patients who visited Saveetha dental college between june 2019 and march 2020 was reviewed. This university setting study involved 61 patients diagnosed with midline diastema .Data was tabulated with parameters of age, gender, treatment options .Data was imported to SPSS for statistical analysis .Descriptive statistics and chi square test was done. Majority of the population 26.2% preferred fixed appliances to treat midline diastema. There was a higher predilection of midline diastema in males.Chi square test showed no significance between age age and treatment options for midline diastema(P>0.05).Chi square test showed significance between gender and treatment options for midline diastema(P<0.05).Fixed appliance was the most preferred treatment option by the patients .Males were more affected by midline diastema .Children below the age of 10 do not require any treatment.Further extensive research can be done with a larger population and larger geographical area.
