Oral Health Status and Treatment Needs Among Out Patients of Different Age Group Reporting to Private Dental College - A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract: Oral diseases can be considered a public health problem due to their high prevalence and significant social impact. Dental caries is a lifetime disease, and the highest priority risk group is school children Adequate knowledge regarding oral health is also mandatory as it is directly related to general health. So the aim of the present study was undertaken to assess the oral health status and treatment needs of patients reporting to private dental colleges. A cross sectional study was conducted among patients visiting private dental college. The subjects were selected randomly from digital data entry. All the patients datas was collected from the digital data entry. A total of 1313 subjects formed the sample size. Dentition status was assessed using DMFT index (Klein, Palmer, Knuston - 1938) for permanent dentition. Oral Health status was assessed using the OHI index (John C Greene and Jack R Vermillion - 1964). Chi-square test was used to find an association between the study variables independent t-test and one way ANOVA were used to compare the mean difference. Among the 1313 study subjects, It can be concluded that patients who require oral prophylaxis was 52.2%, caries was found to be highly prevalent among the age group 18-20 years. Based on the findings, It can be concluded that high prevalence of caries was among the age group 18-20 years. This study emphasizes the need for treating dental caries at its earliest possible stage.
