Antibiotic Preference After Extraction in A Dental Hospital

Author: HARIPRIYA.R , DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, NIVETHIGAA.B
Abstract: Antibiotics are commonly prescribed in dental clinics along with non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs. In dentistry, antibiotics are often prescribed to assist with surgical procedures, treat inflammatory conditions such as gingivitis, ulcers, etc. However, misuse of antibiotics has highlighted the issue of antibiotic resistance, to the extent that a warning was announced by the World Health Organization. was A questionnaire was designed and circulated through an online portal among the UG and PG students of dental college. The questionnaire sought answers to the antibiotics preferred by the practitioner after a dental extraction and the level of awareness on antibiotic resistance. The survey was taken up by a total of 123 responders. Data was entered in excel sheet and analyzed using SPSS Software. Descriptive statistics were expressed by means of frequency and percentage. Chi-square test was used to find the association between the variables. Among the respondents, majority were UG students(73%) while 27% of them were PG students. Of the respondents, 50% of them would prescribe antibiotics always after a dental extraction. However, 35% of them would prescribe sometimes and 15% of them would prescribe rarely. Of the respondents, the majority preferred penicillin with beta lactamase inhibitors to be prescribed after extraction as it is a broad spectrum antibiotic. The results of the survey suggest that penicillin with beta lactamase inhibitor is the most commonly preferred antibiotic after extraction. And, more awareness must be created among practitioners about antibiotic resistance due to misuse of antibiotics.
