Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Endodontic Emergencies and Their Management amongst General Dental Practitioners and Endodontists - A Questionnaire Based Survey

Author: SRUJANA HEMMANUR, IFFAT NASIM, SOWMYA K
Abstract: Endodontic emergencies are a concern for the dental practitioners as they are situations where a patient knocks the door with severe pain and/or swelling and with no prior intimidation. Hence, the management of endodontic emergencies need to be done efficiently so that the patient is comfortable. The aim of the study is to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitude and practice of the management of endodontic emergencies amongst the general dental practitioners (GDPs) and Endodontists. A cross-sectional survey based on a questionnaire was designed. The questionnaire consisted of 20 closed ended multiple choice questions that dealt with the knowledge, attitude and practice for emergency management. All the data is compiled and tabulated in Microsoft Excel and exported to IBM SPSS 20. Data was represented through frequency distribution tables and Chi square tests performed for the comparison between the GDPs and Endodontists. The GDPs and endodontists’ have variable opinions on most of the protocols. Statistical significance is seen in various departments of them among GDPs and Endodontists. Within the limitations of the study, a lack of knowledge in GDPs regarding the management of endodontic emergencies is found, and this should be improvised by educating the practitioners.
