Antibiotic resistance driven by antibiotic prescribing is one of the most serious health threats facing the world today and approximately 30% of antibiotics prescribed in primary care settings are considered unnecessary. Aim of the study is to analyse the role of antibiotics in wound healing of patients undergoing therapeutic orthodontic extractions. Case records of 275 patients from the Saveetha Dental College who underwent therapeutic extractions for orthodontic treatment were considered for this study. Patients were divided into two groups in which one group was antibiotics followed by extraction whereas in the other group no antibiotics were given. Subjective and objective observations recorded that includes age, gender, surgical site wound healing, infection, postoperative pain. Period of study from June 2019 to March 2020. Patients were divided into two groups, Group 1 contains 93 patients for whom antibiotics were given followed by extractions, where as in Group 2 which contains 182 patients, antibiotics were not given following extraction. Both groups of patients were reviewed after 1 week for assessment of wound healing of the extraction site. Assessment parameters are presence or absence of wound healing Statistical analysis was done. Results obtained in this study showed that surgical site wound healing is satisfactory in the patients undergoing therapeutic orthodontic extractions without usage of the antibiotics. Within the limitation of the study, we observed that there is no significant role of antibiotics in therapeutic orthodontic extractions.
