Author: JAYADHARANI , R. GAYATHRI, GANESH LAKSHMANAN, V. VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Social distress is defined as behaviours and situations that are related to physical and psychological strain, where teenagers are mostly affected. Social Distress may also lead to chronic stress. Teenagers are the most vulnerable population to get affected by social distress. Social distress has been associated with the symptoms of depression. An example of social stress includes verbal aggression and over some are psychological and emotional. This usually include depression or anxiety, anger, irritability or restlessness, feeling overwhelmed, unmotivated, or unfocused, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much etc. The main aim of this study was to assess awareness on social distress among the urban teenagers. A questionnaire was distributed through an online google forms link to about 100 urban South Indian teenagers belonging mostly to age groups 13-19 years. The study population were asked to fill out the online form after reading each question thoroughly. The results were collected and the data was analysed using SPSS version 20. From the survey results, it is evident that the majority of the urban teengers are aware of social distress and also believe that most of the teenagers do suffer from social distress. This study gives an insight on the public perception towards social distress among urban teenagers.
