Assessment of Incidence of Dentoalveolar Trauma Treated Under Local Anaesthesia (Closed Reduction) in Patients Reporting to a University Hospital Setting

Author: A.SHAMAA ANJUM, SENTHIL MURUGAN. P, DELPHINE PRISCILLA ANTONY S
Abstract: Dentoalveolar trauma are injuries involving the teeth, the alveolar portion of the maxilla and mandible and adjacent soft tissues and are one of the most serious dental conditions. It includes avulsion of teeth, fracture of alveolar process and laceration of soft tissues. These injuries are most frequently associated with accidents and violence like car sports and occupational injuries. Patients with dentoalveolar injuries frequently have other injuries which can be serious or life threatening. Operative management of dentoalveolar trauma includes open reduction - internal fixation and closed reduction. The aim of the study is to assess the incidence of dentoalveolar fracture treated under local anaesthesia. The reason of the study is to get information about the characteristics for etiology of dentoalveolar trauma and to find the commonly affected age groups and gender which will be of paramount importance in preventing its occurrence. The study was performed under a university setting in which the datas were retrieved and reviewed. The data of patients reported to a university hospital setting with dentoalveolar trauma were included in the study and was compiled, reviewed, tabulated and imported in SPSS software for statistical analysis. The study showed that dentoalveolar trauma is more prevalent among the males (15%) and patients less than 36 years of age (10.3%) . The most common site of occurence of dentoalveolar trauma is the mandible (61%) and most common treatment was found to be ORIF (65%). The chi square test values of the study showed statistical significance (p<0.005) for the gender of the patient, site of occurrence and treatment of dentoalveolar trauma. Within the limitations of the study, the results showed that dentoalveolar trauma in patients visiting a university hospital setting in Chennai, India, were more prevalent in males and patients of 34 years of age mostly affecting the mandible. Studying a greater population with larger sample size of patients from different geographical areas and ethnicities would provide better results to assess the prevalence of dentoalveolar trauma thereby aiding in prevention of its occurrence.
