The Prevalence of Desquamative Gingivitis in Vesiculobullous Condition

Author: SOWMYA G.S, SANKARI MALAIAPPAN
Abstract: Desquamative Gingivitis, plays a major role in early identification of serious mucocutaneous disorder, which has a great impact in clinical practice, thus increasing the efficiency of patient management. The lesions have an abrupt onset which are sometimes confined to the gingiva and their early detection clinically can never be underestimated. Vesiculobullous lesions are usually blistering lesions on skin or oral mucous membranes. Most of these lesions on skin hold good and stay intact for a good period of time, but the lesions in the oral cavity tend to rupture quite easily and expose the raw connective tissue underneath: healing usually leaves behind mild scars. Desquamative gingivitis was commonly associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and multiple systemic conditions which might carry a poor prognosis and high morbidity but however, there are much data concerning the frequency of both the disease associations. The aim of study was to evaluate prevalence of desquamative gingivitis among all vesiculo bullous lesions. Materials and methods: The data was retrieved from DIAS software from saveetha dental college. The vesiculobullous lesions reports was analysed using SPSS software. Results: The most prevalent age group for vesiculobullous lesions was 46-50 years. The most common vesiculobullous lesion was lichen planus, followed by pemphigus. Desquamative gingivitis prevalant in most cases of Vesiculobullous lesion. Conclusion: The association between vesiculobullous lesion and gingivitis was statistically significant p value 0.000 (p<0.05). The females were predominantly affected.
Keyword: Vesiculo bullous lesion, desquamative gingivitis, Lichen planus, pemphigus.
