Association Between Maxillary Arch Form With Facial Form And Facial Profile - A Retrospective Study

Author: DR.SANJANA DEVI, DR.REVATHI DURAISAMY
Abstract: Appraisal of the facial types or forms is a vital aspect in prosthetic diagnosis and treatment planning.Facial form can be classified as leptoprosopic, euryprosopic and mesoprosopic depending on the facial indices.Arch form refers to the overall configuration of the dental arch, and this takes into account the symmetry, roundness, elongation and convexity. The aim of the study is to determine the association between maxillary arch form and facial form and profile. The present cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics, Saveetha Dental College. 110 patients in the age group of 50–75 years were involved in the study.A retrospective data collection was done by analysing and reviewing the patient records from total 86000 case sheets from Saveetha dental college with the period between june 2019-march 2020. . The collected data was analyzed using SPSS program version 20. Chi square test was done to determine significant correlation between arch form, facial form and profile, Significance level was set at P value of < 0 .05. The present study showed that 48.4% of square arch individuals had mesoprosopic face, 35.5% of ovoid arch individuals had mesoprosopic face and 37.5% of tapered arch individuals had mesoprosopic face. 57.5% of square arch individuals have concave profile, 46.7% of ovoid arch individuals have concave profile and 46.9% tapered arch individuals have concave profile. The data was not statistically significant (P=0.784 and P=0.490 respectively). The results of the present study showed that there is no significant association between arch form and facial form and profile.
