Incidence and Prevalence of Different Types of Mandibular Fractures- A University Dental Hospital Based Study

Author: ANKITA KOMAL LABH, SENTHIL MURUGAN P, GEO MANI
Abstract: Mandibular fractures which can be caused due to various reasons such as road traffic accidents, domestic violence etc. are highly prevalent in India. These fractures can occur at various sites in the mandible depending on the site of impact. The aim of this study is to find the prevalence and incidence of these mandibular fractures in patients who reported to the outpatient department of a Dental University Hospital, Chennai, India. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using patient records from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai after reviewing and analysing the data of 86000 patients between June 2019 and March 2020. Microsoft Excel® was used to tabulate the data. The variables involved were gender and type of mandibular fracture. Data was then exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows (Version 19, 2010) for further analysis. The total sample size was 48. Sample had a gender distribution of 85.42% males and 14.58% females. The most common site for mandibular fractures was the right angle (20.83%) and the least common site was left condyle and subcondylar region with 2.08% incidence each. Chi-square test was done and p value was obtained for the data. Within the limits of the study, fractures of the right angle are found to be the most prevalent mandibular fractures. Overall parasymphysIs fractures (right, left and bilateral) had a slightly higher incidence than angle fractures (right and left).
