Author: JAGADHEESWARI RAMAMOORTHY, KEERTHI SASANKA, VENKATESH KOMMI, GEO MANI
Abstract: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is identified as a frequent pathological disorder and awareness of TMDs has amplified within the overall population. TMD may be a term encompassing a broad range of related pathologies of the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involving the masticatory muscles and associated structures. TMD is characterized by symptoms like muscle tenderness, TMJ sounds, deviations or restrictions within the mandibular range of motion and associated headaches. TMD is the commonest orofacial pain condition of non-dental origin. However, TMD prevalence at a large population level may be a matter of debate. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of Temporomandibular disorders among the patients visiting Saveetha Dental College.A sample of 300 patients visiting the hospital were taken. The data of patients with Temporomandibular disorders was collected from the case sheets of the patients from September 2019 to March 2020. All the case sheets were reviewed and the clinical findings were recorded. The data is tabulated in Excel and analysed with the help of SPSS software. In this study we observed that 18.7% of the total patients showed incidence of TMD. Incidence of TMD in females was 21.3% whereas in males it was 16.8%. Females had higher incidence of TMDs compared to males. TMD is observed to be more incident in the age group 20-30 years with an incidence of 39.2%. Within the limits of the study , we observed that 18.7% of the total patients showed incidence of TMD. Female patients showed higher incidence of TMD compared to males. TMD was found to be more prevalent among the age group 20-30 years. Awareness of TMD is an important factor for both clinicians and patients for early diagnosis and treatment.
