There are various risk factors that were reported be highly prevalent in adolescent age group, that can increase
the risk of overweight and obesity. Inadequate physical activity, limited outdoor activity, excessive mobile and
internet use, unhealthy dietary habits including high frequency of eating out and frequent junk food consumption
are some of the documented risk factors for excessive weight gain among adolescents. These practices even
though are still predominant in urban areas, are fast spreading to small towns and rural communities leading to
spread of the overweight and obesity to the epidemic to these traditionally low-risk areas. The study has
highlighted one of the most important but ignored aspect of overweight and obesity i.e. body image perception.
Since body image perception can play a key role in attitude and practices of the adolescents towards healthy
lifestyle and also the psychological health of the individual, it is extremely important to understand this dimension.
Strength of the study is it is a school based study, giving appropriate representation to the different socio
economic strata of the society, by including government and private schools in the sampling.
