Antitumor Activity of Convolvulus arvensis L. Methanolic Extract in Mice

Author: ATHEER S.ALSABAH, GHAITH ALI JASIM
Abstract: Objective: Study aimed to investigate the possible antitumor activity of Convolvulus arvensis L. Methods: The dried leaves powder was extracted with methanol. FT-IR & GC-MS analysis was done to determine the available phytoconstitute, Extract alone and combined with doxorubicin have been evaluated for antitumor activity against AM3 mammary adenocarcinoma in mice. Results: Methanol extract has potent antitumor activity in vivo, the groups of AM3 tumor bearing female mice were treated with methanol extract alone (160mg/kg) and combined with doxorubicin (160mg+3mg/kg), showed significant reduction (p<0.05) in RTV at day 36 of experiment, mean RTV were (2664.6±2.37) and (1708.35±2.94) respectively compared to untreated negative control which recorded the highest increment in mean RTV that was (6429.8±26.67) at day 36. While the highest significant decrement (p<0.05) in RTV recorded at day 15, mean RTV were (224.6±0.72) and (183.6±0.36) respectively compared to untreated negative control which shows an increase in mean RTV that was (1811.25 ±16.04) at day 15. Tumor growth inhibition ratio (TGI%) of treated groups, were that for the first 9 days, TGI% (68%) and (70.13%) respectively; after 15 days, the highest significant TGI% (P<0.05) recorded were (87.6%) and (89.86%) respectively, while at end of 36 days experiment TGI% were (58.56%) and (73.43%) respectively. Conclusion: C. arvensis methanol leave extract and its combination with doxorubicin have significant antitumor activity on AM3 tumor bearing mice. the C. arvensis methanol leave extract can be considered a promising antitumor treatment and the bioological activity can be referred to one or more of the different phytoconstitutes present in the leaves extract.
